ATTENTION: WEST CENTRAL IOWA RURAL WATER CUSTOMERS
As you are aware, we are seeing a prolonged drought which seems to continue. This is resulting in a decrease in the well levels of WCIRWA's well fields in addition to there being an increased demand. To proactively address the decrease in these water levels and the increase in demand and to maintain a satisfactory water supply, we are requesting voluntary water conservation measures.
Effective immediately: As we are continuing to move into the warmest months of the year we are asking everyone to do their part in following guidelines listed below to prevent more restrictive or mandatory measures.
- Use private wells if available. Please see the shock chlorination for small private wells article at the following weblink to make sure you are using and consuming safe water https://store.extension.iastate.edu/product/4200; even out demand by utilizing storage tanks to fill at a lesser rate over a longer period of time, then transfer to equipment; and filling tanks during off peak time from 9 pm to 6 am.
- No watering of lawns.
- No water should be used to fill private swimming pools, children's wading pools, reflecting pools or any other outdoor pool or pond.
- No water should be used for nonessential cleaning of commercial and industrial equipment, machinery, and interior spaces.
- No water shall be used to wash streets, parking lots, driveways, sidewalks or building exteriors.
- Water should be served at restaurants only upon the request of the customer.
- Install water saving devices on faucets and shower-heads, also take shorter showers and lower levels of water in tubs.
- Do only full loads of laundry and fill dishwasher completely before operating.
- Refrain from washing vehicles.
Additional, more-restrictive conservation conditions may be declared depending on the recovery rate of the wells.
Priority of usage if additional measures are needed will be:
1: Human Consumption
2: Livestock consumption
3: Ag use for spraying
Hopefully the drought will not linger and water operations can return to normal.
